India is like most other Asian car making nations, it understands the word export but not trade. You have to assemble cars here in order to sell them and that means the number of brands is less than you would expect. Also, where you get your car sales data will vary, depending on how it was interpreted. If you thing India is chaotic, try to get coherent sales statistics.

Suzuki got in early and established itself selling Maruti brand cars. It now reaps the benefit of its early entry. Hyundai has also been here from the 1990's when things started to take off and is now doing well. Tata got into cars quite late, being a commercial vehicle maker mainly. It did well but has wilted under increasing pressure. It is getting some help from JLR and things are starting to turn around. Nissan is a new to the market and only really got going in 2011, so is playing catch up. It has also smartly got the low cost Datsun brand going in 2014. Combined, they would be the 9th best selling.

Take the data as indicative of what is happening in India. Asian brands dominate while European brands have a fight on their hands.
