The top selling Ford Fiesta, with 133,434 sold |
This was a record year for car sales in the UK, surpassing the previous best in 2003 by nearly 55,000 units. Ford maintained its top placing which it has held since 1977, prior to which BLMC was the most popular. GM Vauxhall retained second, where it has been from 1989. VW took over number three from Renault in 2005 and been there since. All this shows that there has been little change in the top area of the UK car market. Below that the gloves are off.
It looked like Audi was going to hold 4th for a third year straight but BMW outsold in in December by an astonishing 8,000 cars to pip it by a few hundred. Citroën was the highest ranked make to experience a decrease, but this was due to the brand spinning off the DS range. MINI was 8th best selling marque in December (17th full year) with nearly 7,400 sales. Land Rover was 12th for the last month of the year (16th full year) with nearly 5,000 units sold and add over 700 commercial vehicle sales for a nice end to the year.
The large 'Other' figure includes Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Morgan and several other brands either too small in number or in the case of RR, and perhaps others, not wishing to be there. I can't imagine why.
