208 GTi. You need the excitement in the range...

Everyone knows that Peugeot is doing it tough at the moment. Under-utilised factories in France and a product line up that is confusing to anyone not familiar to the brand. Keeping older models running once replaced doesn't help the perception of clutter. In summary, it seems to be a company falling behind.

That said, the recent injection of funds by the French government and Chinese car maker Dongfeng in return for share in the company is helpful. How that will pan out time will tell, but something had to be done.

In case you wonder how the numbers work, the first digit is the size, the second number is always zero and means Peugeot (or nothing really), while the third is the generation. So the 206 was replaced by the 207, which in turn was superseded by the 208. They all continue to sell though (very French). A second central zero equates to a higher body style.

The 200 range of small cars leads the way, with the 208's sales over a third of a million. The next model up, the 308 nearly made a quarter of a mil sales. After that it falls away. There are too many models not doing enough and there is no quick fix to that.
