The new Rolls Royce Dawn model |
Rolls Royce cars have been around since 1906, making 2016 the 120th anniversary year. Unfortunately, 2015 was a 'speed bump' year for Rolls Royce. That was because a major market China had a substantial sales fall of 54%. Despite that, global sales dropped only 6.8%.
The Wraith is a 4 seater coupé that is based on the Ghost chassis. It was released in 2013 and help Rolls Royce to its best ever sales year in 2014. Sales slipped 11.4% in 2015.
The Ghost model went up in sales, 3.5% to be precise. It came out in 2010 and quickly established itself as a popular model for the marque.
Phantom sales fell 18.9%, no doubt due the the Chinese situation. This is the Mk II that came out in 2012 and is the flagship model for Rolls Royce.
Model | 2015 | % | +/- | |
Wraith | 1,688 | 44.6% | -11% | |
Ghost | 1,609 | 42.5% | 3% | |
Phantom | 488 | 12.9% | -19% | |
Total | 3,785 | -7% |

Summary: The Chinese market is cooling, but the drop in sales there exceeded what I expected. How well RR go in 2016 will depend in a large part as to how things go there. A new model - the Dawn Drophead 2-door coupé - is being released in early 2016 and should add impetus to sales. An SUV Rolls is probably coming out in 2017 which will take RR into a new field, up against the likes of the Bentley Bantayga.
