The new XC90 is an important vehicle for Volvo |
This is the first time in Volvo Car's 89 year history that sales have exceeded 500,000. The USA led the increase with a 24% rise and 70,000 sales. Western Europe grew nicely as well with a 10.6% upturn and claimed 53% of sales with 269,000 units moved. China was flat with 81,500 sales and 16% of the total.
Models: The XC60 led the way as the biggest selling model and a strong 17% increase. The XC90 had the largest increase courtesy of a new model. The car range was generally stable in volume. The swing in popularity for SUVs over cars is well reflected by what is happening with Volvo. Despite that, cars (and wagons) are still the core business of the company.

Summary: Volvo has built its reputation around safety. It is also getting into hybrid technology and moving toward electric vehicles. It doesn't have a good track record with small cars and getting that sorted would help Volvo reach its goal of 800,000 sales per annum.
