Car makers want to sell cars. Car makers report their own fuel use. They
also know that what they claim may affect the purchasing decision. Do
you see the potential for manipulating results? Who couldn't? That would
be like asking US car dealers to vote on whether Tesla should be
allowed to sell cars directly to the consumer. The result will not be
fair.
Recently in the USA Hyundai and Kia have paid out over $700 million in fines and compensation for overstated fuel consumption claims. It has been announced that in Europe the average disparity for fuel use claims by car makers has gone up from 8% in 2001 to 31% in 2013. The worst offender? Mercedes Benz at a whopping 40%. Are they that desperate to sell cars?
I suppose if the system isn't strict, then unscrupulous capitalism drives companies to get an advantage, even if it means cheating. It's widespread and should be clamped down on. If the USA hits the cheats hard, then why is Europe not doing the same? Otherwise, it gets out of hand the way it has in Europe.
