The XTS model is made in Canada and China

Cadillac don't make it to New Zealand, in fact they don't make it to many countries. It just doesn't have a global feel to it. With about 97% of all sales in the US, Canada and China, Cadillac is anything but an international make. North America accounted for just over a third of sales in 2014, down from over three quarters in 2013. The difference was China, where the brand is doing quite well. Production is being moved there which will spur sales, as import duty is steep on imported vehicles. So much for free trade.

What GM is planning for the marque, I am not clear on but one would have to think that it needs to expand its horizons. What GM needs is patience, as it will take time to take sales off makes already well established. At least Cadillac do offer something different.

Data source for chart: Cadillac.

NZ was in line to become a market for Cadillac but GM changed its mind. A NZ company bought 88 of the CTS cars in 2009 and soon sold them. A slightly smaller number were then obtained in 2010 that had been going to the UK. There was enough local demand to sell them without any trouble I believe. Official figures state 134 cars were sold, but 159 were supposed to have been imported.

Cadillac Global Sales By Nation : 2014

The data below is as accurate as I can get it and is good enough to be released. I wrote to Cadillac to ask if they could help to get it absolutely correct but no reply. While associations representing importers and the like will usually reply, manufacturers never do. They could just to say "We do not provide that sort of information, sorry. It is commercially sensitive". Come on, the competition already know. Still a reply is polite and who knows, I could be a 'Lac customer one day!

Cadillac made just over 235,000 units in 2014, a nice growth of 10.2% but the total should be better. GM wants Cadillac to rub shoulders with the likes of BMW and JLR in more markets. That needed to happen a few decades ago but it has to be done now.

These Cadillac model designations mean nothing to me and to many others that come here no doubt. So let's explain them. First the cars...

The XTS looks as American as apple pie, as it should

XTS: A large sedan that replaced both the DTS and STS (slightly smaller).

ATS: A compact sized sedan which replaced the BLS, a European Cadillac based on the Saab 9-3 and built in Sweden.

CTS: This sits between the above two as a medium sized car. It replaced the Catera, an Opel Omega model built in Germany.

ELR: I'm surprised that GM did this plug-in hybrid premium compact coupé as it never was going to be a big selling car but they would have done the maths.

Now for the SUVs...

SRX: The model is a mid sized SUV, that is by far the biggest selling vehicle for the marque.
The best selling 'Lac, accounting for 43% of all production

Escalade: This is a large SUV base on GMC/Chevrolet equivalent models. The ESV is a longer version and the EXT was a sports utility pick up variant.

Summary: Having done this article, I now know something about the marque myself. The increase in SUV production should give a hint of where future model expansion would do the most good. Cars will go well in China and there is plenty of potential in that nation. For most other markets, the SUV range will be more important.

Cadillac Global Production By Model : 2014

When writing about a marque you know nothing about and gaining data from different sources means that care is required. Below is a breakdown of production by models as best as I understand it. Underneath the chart is an explanation of the models. I have many US readers and others who may be knowledgeable on the marque so please leave a comment if you can clear up anything of add something of interest.

De Ville / DTS / XTS: The Deville model range goes back to 1958 and the 7th generation De Ville came out in 1994, using a platform shared by the Seville. This large premium car was replaced by the 8th and final of this nameplate in 2000. From 2005 it became the DTS, and from 2012 the XTS. The XTS is smaller than its predecessor but it also replaces the STS.

Seville / STS / XTS: The mid sized Seville started life in 1975, this list encompassing the 4th generation that was released in 1992. After the 5th generation that was produced between 1998 and 2004, it became the STS. US production ended in 2011 and in China 2013. The XTS replaced it and the DTS, with production shown under the latter model.

Eldorado / CTS: I recall having a Dinky car Eldorado, yellow and a convertible. I think it was the 54-56 2nd generation model. I digress. The name started way back in 1952, and by 1992, the 10th generation was being made. It was the last in the series and by now they were shorter in length than earlier examples. By now it was classified as a 2-door coupé with what I consider the best looking with clean lines. The CTS came in 2002 and the 3rd incarnation came out in 2014 as a mid sized 4-door car.

BLS / ATS: The BLS was a compact premium car based around the Saab 9-3. Made in Sweden, it came as a 4-door car and 5-door wagon. It was a poor seller and GM must have lost millions on it. It was made between 2005 and 2009. It was also assembled in Russia and I am unsure if the above figures include those from Russia and why 2009 production is nowhere to be found. Then came the US made ATS in 2012.

ELR: This unusual inclusion into the range is an up market plug-in hybrid compact coupé. What a mouthful! The drive train is based on the Chevy Volts and the car sells in tiny numbers as expected I'm sure.

Allanté / XLR: This compact 2-seater roadster had its body panels made in Italy by Pininfarina, which were then flown to the US to have the chassis and engine fitted. It was made form 1986 to 1993, so just made the list above. It was revived in 2003 as a halo model named the XLR.

Catera: Made in Germany, this large 4-door car was the same as the Omega model sold in Europe. The engine was made in the UK and transmission France, making it a pan-European effort. It went from 1998 to 2001.

Fleetwood: The last model to be considered here ran from 1984 to 1996, which was a large premium model. The first generation was produced either as a 2-door coupé and 4-door car, the 2nd generation from 1993 a car only.
