This data is for all vehicles, including the big commercial ones. Sales hit a peak in 2012 when 1.5 million were sold, but last year 800,000. This year so far is identical in volume to 2015, so the slump has leveled off. Because it is a heavily protected market - as is usually the case in Asia - only those who have invested heavily in local assembly do really well. They also get a reputation and following, making it difficult for newcomers who open plants to elbow their way in.
Toyota has its lowest market share since 2001, due to competition from old foes and some new ones too. Ford is one that is trying to make a name for itself and is having some success, I would think based around the Ranger utility vehicle. SAIC MG has recently opened a plant and is gaining some traction. It will be interesting to see if it can maintain that momentum.
