The end is nigh for the Holden Commodore

A change in the Australian motoring landscape took place in 2016 and will continue to play out in 2017. That is the cessation of car production, which goes back to the 1920's. Only three were left, with Ford already gone. GM Holden and Toyota follow this year. Of those three, Holden will probably feel it the worst on the dealer forecourt.

Total sales were a record for the year, beating last year's record by 2%. Private sales declined by nearly 6% but business sales and rentals pushed registrations into positive territory.

In the list below, yellow represents decreased sales, pale blue increase but lost market share, green increase in share and salmon exceeding 100%.

Toyota leads by some margin and held it too, although had a tiny trimming of its market share so it gets to be pale blue. It is the lowest share it has had since 1997. Mazda cracked the 10% mark for the first time ever. Hyundai had it's second year of reduced share of the pie and Holden ended up 4th. I can't say when it has been that low before. Ford came back from it's all time low of 6th to pass Mitsubishi with a 15% gain in sales. Kia got back into the top ten after an absence of over a decade.

Further down, Chrysler crashed by about half, with Fiat and Peugeot not doing well either. Yet again Jaguar and van maker LDV both had fine increases in excess of 100%, the same as was the case in New Zealand.
