As I have mentioned before, Norway is an insular nation. It seems to look inward and cautious with 'outsiders'. Statistics are handled by a company that makes a living selling the data. Of course it needs to protect the resource, but those willing to pay want detail and are presumably professionals within the auto industry. This caution I mentioned earlier means that only the top 10 brands are released. I am sure releasing all brands total sales is not the statistics companies pay for. It wouldn't, therefore, impact on their business. I guess we must be grateful for small mercies. I managed to get the top 20 for this list.

Toyota had a nice growth, but still some way from the summit, Kia, Mazda and Subaru are climbing but Mitsubishi fell into a deep crevasse.

The data below shows rank in 2011, then 2012, brand, total sales, increase/decrease and finally market share.

VW retained top spot, but with a reduction in its lead, with both Ford and Peugeot taking a bit of a hammering. Mind you nothing like Mitsubishi, 5th last year and falling off the chart in 2012!

Car Sales Norway: 2012

A new feature as promised is sales by model. It will have its own label too to differentiate from sales by brand only.

Unsurprisingly, VW and Toyota models dominate. What does catch the eye is the success of the electric model, the Nissan Leaf (pic above). Clearly the Norwegian government is subsidising eco-friendly cars, and Nissan have been able to take advantage of that (+516%). Subaru did well with the VX model while the Mitsi ASX is now so passe (-52%).

Car Sales Norway By Model: 2012

Very Popular Nissan leaf

When it comes to buying a new car, I would like to buy electric. However being a single car family, the car's limited range before having to recharge is a deal breaker. 95% of the time - around town - it would be fine, but for those away trips - impossible. Also the premium price charged is something I couldn't swallow.

In Norway the government assists the electric car buyer. The steep purchase taxes are waived, annual registration, parking fees, and tolls likewise. Some of these benefits will end once electric car ownership is well established. For now however, buying an electric model is comparable in purchase cost to a petrol equivalent. Add the other incentives too, and it is compelling! With virtually all of Norway's power hydro sourced, driving an electric car is truly a green solution.

Hybrid car purchasers didn't benefit like electric car buyers, but now they have been given a government incentive as well. They are now likely to become more popular as a result. To see how this electric revolution is going, let's look at hard statistics.

The Tesla S Model
Nissan Leaf: Top selling car in Norway in October, 2013 (5.6% of the total market) and 4th best seller for 2013 Jan - Oct period (3.2% YTD).

Tesla S: 900 sold in Jan-Oct 2013. For a premium
electric car that is a big number.

Toyota Auris Hybrid (Tourer Model)

Toyota Auris: This model includes a hybrid option, and it is in 2nd place in sales for October 2013. Most of this model's sales for the latest month were for the hybrid. It is second YTD on the Norwegian sales chart as well.

There are other electric and hybrid models benefitting, but the ones listed are the most notable and show the extent things are happening in Norway with greener car purchasing. Therefore, Norway is very much going electric, in car sales that is.

Norway Is Electric - In Cars

Oslo
A sales increase for Norway of 3% was good by European standards, although car dealers would have surely liked more. Toyota and VW have switched the leading spot for some years now, but recently VW has established itself as the bigger selling brand. That said, Toyota shaved it's lead in 2013.

Toyota Auris Hybrid a hot seller in Norway
Toyota can thank the Auris model for a good year, Nissan gained well through the Leaf model, Mazda the CX5 and Mitsubishi the Outlander. In smaller markets with government incentive programmes for eco-cars, change can be quite dramatic. Tesla's S model made a late and spectacular entrance that can only be made in an 'electric car friendly place' like Norway.

In the chart below colours used for each brand show how they fared. Green for increase, blue for increase sales but losing market share, and yellow reduced sales.

The VW Golf  leads VW's rearguard action

Norway Sales By Brand : 2013

The Tesla S is a looker. More importantly electric

The top 20 in Norway make for interesting reading. Japanese brands make up four of the top five models, unusual for Europe. Mind you the Auris, Leaf, Qashqai and Avensis all hail from the UK and the Yaris France. US brands only feature twice, which is low for the region.

Some extreme movements of model sales occur here. 100%+ increases and 40% decreases are the norm it seems. The V40 helped Volvo to an increase of 3%, the Leaf enabled Nissan to grow 23%. Meanwhile the Auris was the reason for Toyota improving 7%.  Unfortunately, the Golf's +17% could not stop VW falling 7%.
