In smaller markets, changes are usually more dramatic. Certainly this applies to Estonia for the last year. Sales were up over 65%, and the rankings moved drastically too. I have included 2010 rankings to show where the movement was. Sales are well down on the 2007 peak of 31,400 but the best in the last three years.

Toyota has been top since 2004, before that Peugeot for three years, then various other brands, so change is normal in the Estonian market. Skoda has not been top before, and I find it surprising a make with such a limited range of cars to do so well.
My guess: Things will continue improving here.

Car Sales Estonia: 2011

In the tiny Baltic state of Estonia, they are very good at getting data sorted and available. Unfortunately my Estonian isn't that good so have done my best to put together statistics showing how things are there.


Toyota were top here from 2004 until 2011, when Skoda took top spot. Toyota came back with a vengeance in 2012 and with a gain of market share from 10.2 to 12.8%, easily regained the lead. In a country where sales grew 13%, going backwards is a big step backwards, as Skoda, Peugeot, Renault and Opel found. Both Kia and Land Rover managed increases in excess of 100%! Kia jumped from 14th to 7th but LR stayed put on 27th.

Car Sales Estonia: 2012


Tallinn, Estonia. Looks like a fascinating city

I must say the openness and speediness of car sales data from Estonia gives me a positive feeling about the country. I believe such a thing can say much about a nation and it's way of thinking.

Sales were up slightly in this small state of just over 1.3 million. Toyota remained top quite comfortably. By colouring the chart below, an interesting trend emerges. Green shows brands that increased market share, and they were mainly larger selling brands. Yellow is makes that lost share and they are generally smaller sellers. Blue was increased sales but loss of market share. VW was the only brand to increase but have slightly smaller serving of the pie, so it has a colour on its own.

The Honda CR-V is popular in Estonia

Car sales in Estonia were the best since 2008, and a 7% improvement on the year before. For a small nation, sales are quite stable, with only a few big swings. Premium brands do not sell in large numbers but are steadily moved up in 2014.

Toyota has been the top brand since 2004, except for one year (2011). In that year Toyota hit its lowest point (10.2%) since 2002 and has since moved up to almost 14%. Clearly a wake up call for the world's biggest car maker.
