Suzuki manufacture over 40% of all cars made in India

After many years of increase, the last couple of years of vehicle production in India have slightly contracted. Large increases are expected in the future though, with suggestions of 7 million vehicles made there by 2020. Low wage costs and a growing domestic market will both help.

Cars: Suzuki got in early and have never looked back. For example, in the 1990's they made nearly 70% of all cars in India. Hyundai got going at the end of the 90's and have now established themselves as the second biggest car maker. Tata got into cars in the mid 90's and initially did well but have slumped recently. JLR will no doubt be of help in the future, although they are busy expanding themselves. Neither BMW, Mercedes nor JLR are here as I don't have figures for them. I also don't know if they have local content to warrant being called Indian made.

Utility: Tata are the big commercial vehicle maker and routinely exceeded 60% of unit production. From 2010, they dropped under 60% and in 2014 50%. The tiny truck market has been poor the last couple of years, which will have hurt some manufacturers.

Summary: One assumes that the industry will prosper, despite the recent stalling. Local growth will help but some car makers are planning to make India an export hub, and that will make the nation a much larger vehicle maker than it is now.
