When VW took on Škoda in 1991, it was a small brand with a poor
reputation. Things have changed. It's taken twenty years to see a very
different car brand. Once people trust the brand, and the price is
right, things start to happen. They seemed to have more freedom that
SEAT, and they have a niche that everyone understands. I cannot say the
range of cars they have is completely balanced yet, but is on the way
there.
The chart below is in two parts. On the left 1991-99 and the right side 2000-09. Numbers are in hundreds.
1) Octavia. It's considered a compact car, but it seems at the larger end of that segment. It has been a very successful model, reviving the model of the same name that ceased back in 1971.
2) Fabia/Felica/Favorit. It's taken a while to get the name right for this car. This supermini model was the Favorit as a 5 door Hatch and the Forman when a wagon. It became the Felicia over a few years in the 1990's before the Fabia label arrived around the year 2000. Along with the Ocatvia, a volume seller for the marque.
3) Superb. The last Škoda Superb ended in 1949. The large saloon car returned in 2001 as a 4 door car. The generation 2 gained a wagon model, while the car can also double as a hatchback, depending how you open the rear lid. Clever.
4) Roomster. This model you either get or you don't. Perhaps not enough people 'got it'. MPV may be the best way to describe it and it is different. Clever, but perhaps too much so. It also comes as a light commercial vehicle (the Praktik), which I assume is included in the figures below for I cannot find them elsewhere.
5) Yeti. This SUV just made it in time for the 2009 deadline for this analysis. I think it should have come sooner but VW hasn't been the quickest company to embrace that booming sector.
Summary: In this time, Škoda has gone from a one model, small selling brand to a popular make in Europe and China. It still has many countries to enter. They sell here in New Zealand and are slowly gaining acceptance. It was a make that was joked about when it sold here in the communist era. Things have changed.
