VW advanced strongly from the year 2000 to 2009, thanks in a major way to having got in early in China and reaped the rewards as the market soared. A very solid look about the production numbers over several models is seen below.

The 2009 Golf. They just keep selling.

1) Golf. It remains the leading model, although not by the same margin. I added the Eos convertible as it was introduced as a replacement for the Golf soft top. It has never quite got past the million mark in a calendar year.

2) Passat/Santana. This large car sells so well in China. It has since passed the Golf to be the biggest seller.

3) Jetta/Bora. The Golf with a boot has been but it is now larger and I have kept it separate. It has also gone by the names Bora and Vento among others.

4) Gol/Parati. This Latin American subcompact hatchback the Gol with its wagon version the Parati have been big sellers in that region.

5) Polo/Classic/Sharan. As a supermini, it has been an important part of VW. It was backed up by an older Classic version for developing markets while the Suran is a MPV/Wagon of the Gol.

6) Fox/Lupo. This small city car is now known as the Fox, and is mainly sold in Latin America.

7) Tiguan. This compact SUV is a solid selling vehicle, an important part of the move toward this growing segment for VW.

8) Touran. The compact MPV is a popular car for the brand.

9) Scirocco. After a long absence, the compact sporty model is back. Made at the same plant as the Eos and Sharan MPV, it is a halo model for VW.

10) New Beetle. It really fell away badly in the 2000's as it aged badly. A new model has breathed some life back into into since. 

11) Touareg. This mid sized SUV is made in a VW factory in Slovakia. Sells well for its size. 

12) Sharan. This large MPV is a consistent model for the company. 

13) Old Beetle. It was finally put to rest early in the decade. 

14) Phaeton. VW went the way of a luxury saloon car to take on the premium brands such as Mercedes who were moving into VW territory with cars such as the A-Class. Classy as it may be, it proves that you need a prestigious badge to match the car's status.

VW Brand Car Production By Model : 2000-09
