Somewhere in rural New Zealand.... |
The data here is of total vehicle sales, including all commercial vehicles. I've not done that before with NZ, but with pick-up trucks counted as LCVs, and Kiwis really taking to them, I decided it painted a better picture of the situation. For example, Ford is very strong in LCVs, but less so in cars. They are 4th for passenger sales but 2nd overall due mainly to the Ranger truck, which is a strong seller.
I decided to colour code the chart according to sales movement. Green is sales up and also market share. The purple shows sales are up but market share is down. Yellow is a sales decrease, hard to justfy in a booming market. Since the year 2010, vehicles sales have been up 15%, 5%, 19% and the last two 12%. Add large numbers of used vehicles too, and it adds up to a lot more cars on the roads.
Toyota has been on top for decades but 19.4% is the worst since 2005. The Hilux has been the top selling pick up truck for 32 years but got knocked off its perch by the Ford Ranger. That must have hurt. Holden is doing well, especially with cars. Mitsubishi priced its cars sharply and that has paid off. Honda finally positioned the new Jazz (Fit) where it ought to be cost wise and reaped the benefit of that. Fiat and Land Rover both had strong growth, as did Mclaren.
