In the year that BMW sold Land Rover to Ford, it released it's first SUV. BMW has since spread itself across the SUV range with new models. Now just over a quarter of BMW brand sales are from these four models. I have to say I didn't like the X6 when it came out and still don't. I wouldn't call its sales strong either, so maybe others feel the same way. All the others seem to have been worth the effort.
The mid-sized X5 is made in the USA, with emphasis to on road use. The third generation has just been released and design change has been evolutionary.
The X3 followed, designed in conjunction with Magna Steyr in Austria, who also made the first version. The second generation came in 2010 and production moved to the USA.
The X6 came in 2008 and is also a USA assembled vehicle. Very similar in size to the X5, X6 is supposed to be more car-like but is to me an overweight car, in a niche that doesn't really exist. I would imagine the X5 and X6 take sales off each other more than the competition.
Finally the X1 arrived, the compact crossover that should have come sooner. It is made in Germany and China, the latter no doubt helping it to become the best selling SUV for BMW in 2014.
