Vehicle Sales Australia: 2012

In Australia, there is only one way you get sales statistics, that is total. In other words, there is no separation with passenger cars and commercial vehicles. So Mercedes sales here includes trucks. Having said that, commercial sales are quite small so the data still gives the picture.
Seeing Toyota and Holden the top two is no surprise, but Ford at 5th is. Back in 1997, Ford was top and for all of last decade 3rd. Big car sales have dropped, the large Ford Falcon fell away badly in sales and the Falcon lost ground to arch rival the Holden Commodore. It also took too long to get a diesel engine in its locally made SUV, the Territory. Australians also fell in love with a car they totally over-rate, the Mazda 3.
Nissan had a strong year, especially with the Dualis (Qashqai), VW closed in on faltering Mitsubishi, and both Chrysler and Land Rover had good years. Two Chinese brands had mixed fortunes, Great Wall strong but Chery not so. Opel was reintroduced and had a quiet start. A good year overall for the market, but 2013 may be more subdued.
