The local car market is heavily protected by import duties. For the size of the population, sales are modest, due to low incomes for many. If commercial vehicle sales were taken out, personal car sales would be very low. Some brands such as Land Rover and Jaguar are sold but the importer does not release sales figures. Such secrecy is so last century, and not proactive.

Local importers association CAMPI doesn't do press releases with such data. They should do much better.

Car Sales Philippines: 2011

The agency for dispensing car sales data for Indonesia (Gaikindo) isn't as open as it used to be. I managed to find the top 15 only, including commercial vehicles. Still, it gives a good indication of what is doing well in the car industry there.

For a start, like most Asian countries it is dominated by Toyota and Japanese brands. They are in yellow while all others are pale green. Over 1 million sales is impressive, but for the size of the population not surprising. The Mitsubishi figure seems to include the Fuso brand, which is now part of the  Daimler Truck Division. Therefore the increase figure I have is misleading.

The first two columns show 2011 and 2012 ranking, the second column in from the right is increase or decrease, and the extreme right shows market share for the major brands.

Vehicle Sales Indonesia: 2012

The Lada Granta is popular, seen here on vacation.

Car sales in this central Asian region are surprising strong. It is a place rich in oil and minerals, plus good agricultural land. Therefore the car industry reflects the growing prosperity. From 38,350 sales in 2011 to over 150,000 now is amazing growth. It leveled off in 2014 which is understandable. As you can see in the rankings in the list below, new makes are arriving each year to take advantage of the sales increase.

The Lada Kalina sells well too.

Lada is easily the best selling brand, but has slipped over the last two years. It would be logical to expect this trend to continue as more competition arrives. The Korean brands are making hay with improved sales and share of the total. Renault has been growing very fast, from about 350 in 2011 to over 8,000 in 2014!

Premium marques are not that strong, with Lexus the preferred make, with Mercedes and Land Rover battling over the second spot. I'm surprised Opel isn't here, perhaps that is being left to the Chevolet brand.
