Does it matter who's the biggest car manufacturer? Are new car buyers swayed by such information? I think not, although nationalistic tendencies and brand loyalty may motivate an attraction to this sort of data. I suppose a company's image is affected by how well they may be doing, or not. As for the car producers, there is satisfaction in passing a competitor, especially when being number one.
The chart below reveals that there may be a real challenge in exceeding ten million units. Keeping track of everything at that level cannot be easy. Toyota recently pulled back on growing anymore until it felt it could do so without tarnishing its hard won reputation for durable vehicles. GM too realised that it need to improve profitability rather than chase numbers. VW tried too hard to win the race and is now paying a price for that.
