Below the volume car makers come numerous car companies. I will address some of these that have some size worth noting.
Bentley. 10,600 cars made is good volume. They are also in the super luxury class so contribute well beyond the unit figures suggest. Design work is done at Crewe and all the engines are made there too.
Production share (car) of the UK total: 0.7%. UK value rating: 5/10.
Rolls Royce. 4,400 high value cars produced. Design work I think is mainly done in Germany and engines are brought in from BMW so less local content than Bentley.
Production share (car) of the UK total: 0.3%. UK value rating: 3/10.
Aston Martin. 3,950 units made. All design work is done within the UK and engines currently come from Ford I believe. Mercedes will be a future supplier.
Production share (car) of the UK total: 0.3%. UK value rating: 4/10.
Ford. No cars are made but R&D is done in the UK and 1.5 million engines. Hard to rate a company like this. The scale of the contribution is deceptively large.
Production share (car) of the UK total: 0.0%. UK value rating: 6/10.
That concludes the series on each car maker with a summary is to come. It starts with Nissan (found here). There are other small car manufacturers such as Mclaren, Lotus, Morgan and Caterham. Their size limits the contribution but they certainly add value to the economy collectively.
The previous article is for Jaguar (found here).
