The Ypsilon model needs broad shoulders |
If Alfa Romeo have had problems, spare a thought for Lancia. The once proud marque has also suffered from lack of investment. This year it was decided that the brand would only be sold in Italy and rebadging Chrysler models as Lancias would cease. Only the Ypsilon will continue and one has to wonder about what happens when the exisiting model reaches its 'use by' date.
Now for the chart below. Sales are in hundreds and I have assembled the data together from various sources. A dash means no production, while double zero means I have no data for that year.
Ypsilon/Y: The Y took over from the Autobianchi Y10 when that brand ceased. This 3 door hatchback proved popular for Lancia. It became the Ypsilon in 2003, and a 5 door model in 2011 when production went to Poland.
Delta: This larger 5 door hatchback car started life in 1979 and was just in it's second generation when the chart below starts. It ended in 1999 and wasn't replaced until 2008, and hasn't been successful. It is to end production later in 2014 it seems.
The Delta will ride into the sunset. Shame as it is a good car I hear. |
Grand Voyager: Chrysler was the source of this MPV. It replaced the Phedra but I kept them separate for this listing. I didn't agree with the idea but it was a case of trying to shore up Lancia. It too will end as a Lancia product.
Thema/Thesis/Kappa: The large executive car the Thema was being replaced by the Kappa in 1994. This model then ran until the year 2000, then a year later the Thesis took over the mantle. That was eventually replaced in 2011 by a rebadged Chrysler 300, reviving the Thema name.
Flavia: Yet another Chrysler car, this time the 200 model sold using this iconic Lancia name and offered as a convertible. A pointless exercise by any standards.
Musa: This mini MPV was based on the Fiat Idea model, but upmarket. It was a success but hasn't been replaced.
The Musa has gone too. Looks OK |
Lybra/Dedra: The Lybra was a compact executive car that went from 1989 to 1999. The Lybra then took over until 2005.

Lancia is another brand in a market overwhelmed by so much choice. It is a marque that needed more done with it years ago and recent management could do nothing much with it. Rebadging Chrysler cars may have seemed an expedient solution, but largely failed.
