The VW Golf arrived in 1974 and was an immediate success

The early 1970's were a time for growth in Sweden, with car sales doing well. Volvo didn't grow as fast as the market by any means but had such a lead that it kept well in front in sales. Saab was enjoying a positive spell as did VW which took third off a disappointing GM Europe. Vauxhall cars still sold here but the numbers had fallen into the hundreds by 1974. This was the last year that Ford UK provided cars in volume as the switch appears to have been made to use Germany instead from 1975.

A new feature were Japanese makes arriving and establishing themselves with success. Lada arrived as Moskvich left and Rootes made a bit of a comeback. BLMC had now absorbed just about all the UK car industry and was now struggling manage it all.
