The Volvo 480 from 1986-1995

Sales continued to improve, having passed 200,000 in 1982, the 300,000 mark was broken just five years later in 1987. Volvo had 27.0% share of the market in 1985, but it had dropped to 21.7% for both 1988 and 1989. Saab fared worse, with 14.3% in 1980 but only 8.4% in 1989 and in the process losing over 40% of its share. Ford took 2nd spot by default as it lost quite a lot of percentage as well.

Japanese brands started to gain in this period after stalling in the early 80's. In fact most smaller brands gained ground on the biggest five makes. Things looked good, but there was trouble ahead. The economy had overheated in the mid to late 80's and 1989 saw the beginning of a strong decline in car sales.
