Volvo have put much into making their cars as safe as possible. They were also known as making boxy looking cars. They have kept with the safety and moved toward more rounded, stylish vehicles. Has it worked? Sales over this period have not moved much while the German competition has.
A major reason for this is Volvo didn't get much penetration in China. It is now fixing that quickly with new owner Geely. It is also going to export Chinese made Volvo cars too, something other premium car makers have shied away from.

As for safety, Volvo is ahead of anyone else. People think that any premium marque is going to be just as good in a crash. However, if safety is paramount for your premium vehicle purchase then look no further than Volvo.

As for sales per model, I can go back to 2000, then I hit a wall. I had to estimate a bit for that year too but not much. Still, it gives an idea of how things have gone of late. The chart below has sales in hundreds. As for each model...

S60/V60: The S60 is a compact car which was preceded by the S70 in the year 2000. The V60 is the estate car version.

The Volvo S60. The brick is clearly no longer the style inspiration

XC60: It is a compact SUV that is the best selling individual model for Volvo.

S40/V40/V50: The S40 is a compact car and the V models stand for versatile or wagon. They were the 40, then 50 and now going back to 40 again.

The V40 is quite a nice looking car

V70/XC70: These models are estate cars, the latter all wheel drive. Usually wagons are attached to a car variant but it seems it is somewhat of as a stand alone model.

XC90: A mid-sized SUV that was a strong seller but increased competition has reduced sales.

S80: This executive car has been around a while. It has the V70 as its estate version, but I put that with the XC70.

C70: It was a coupe and soft top, but the second generation from 2006 has a retractable hard top.

C30: A three door compact hatch model similar to the S/V40 in size was worth a try but didn't quite hit the spot and has now been deleted.
