The Wuling Hongguang is the top seller in China. No, really

I am reluctant to put any articles here on the Chinese car market. The reason? Numerically it is the largest car market in the world, yet getting reliable, consistent data is a challenge. Sales figures always exclude imported cars, which wouldn't - as it turns out - affect this list due to prohibitive import duties. However, the Asian mentality about wanting to export, while obstructing imports I find somewhat galling. Throughout much of Asia, a fair playing field is a strange notion in the area of trade.

Still, foreign brand proliferate in China; made in factories with compulsory local joint venture partners. Sedan and hatch variants count as differing models, so for example two Corolla and Focus models are listed. The two Hyundai Elantra models below are made by separate companies. Are they different in some way? Typical of the confusion of car statistics for China.

Europe (or basically VW) provide the most common nameplates on this list. Chinese brands tie with Japan as do US and Korean. Korea does surprisingly well and the Japanese you imagine would do better but for bitter feelings in China with that nation.
