Nissan UK keeps on growing. Back in 1986, Nissan UK assmebled 5,000 Primeras. Local content increased, as did numbers. In 1991, the 100k figure was passed with 125,000 Primeras made. The Micra was added in 1992 and 246,000 cars were produced in 1993 at the plant. The Almera joined the production line in the year 2000, when the 300k mark was passed (327,000). 2010 was the first time 400k was reached (423,000) with the Qashqai, Micra, Juke and Note models all contributing.

The Micra has now gone, but Sunderland will build the new Invitation model from 2013. Now a new hatchback model that will compete with Ford Focus sized cars (which has not yet been named), will be added in 2014. The additional 80,000 new hatchbacks along with the 100,000 Invitation cars will bring the annual output up to more than 550,000 vehicles. Both assembly lines will have to run 24 hour shifts to meet the production requirements.
Nissan chief operating officer Toshiyuki Shiga said: "In Europe, Nissan has achieved record growth in recent years by providing innovative, customer-focused models like Qashqai and Juke that are designed, developed and produced within the region."
Nissan Europe is on a roll and so is Nissan Sunderland. It is a great boost to the region which needs investment. With a depressed European market, is good to see Nissan not talking plant closure but growth. Make cars people want and the sales will follow.
