An Infiniti at the Geneva Show 2014. Sales are growing in Europe

This is the closest sales comparison, with 1:1.01 the difference. Put another way, for every 100 cars sold in Switzerland, 101 were sold in Austria. Despite that, the very different nature of their respective economies means that the comparison is anything but close for premium vehicles. Switzerland is a tax haven of sorts, attracting the wealthy. Many of them buy premium cars.

The charts below are coloured to show which nation buys more of a brand. In this case the yellow shows that all premium and luxury cars are bought in greater number in Switzerland than in Austria. The ratio determines how much.

While the three main German premium brands are the most evenly distributed between nations, only Audi gets anywhere close to an even split. Even having a MINI model made in Austria seemed to make no difference.

Brand Austria Switz Ratio

Caterham 2 31 0.06

Infiniti 12 118 0.10

Lotus 9 77 0.12

Maserati 116 731 0.16

Tesla 136 496 0.27

Lexus 272 853 0.32

Porsche 1,049 3,165 0.33

Jaguar 265 622 0.43

Volvo 3,100 6,867 0.45

MINI 2,119 4,463 0.47

Land Rover 1,870 3,490 0.54

Alfa Romeo 1,217 2,104 0.58

KTM 3 5 0.60

Mercedes 11,712 18,384 0.64

BMW 15,803 21,144 0.75

Audi 18,361 20,949 0.88

Luxury cars were even more one sided as the above reason would you lead to conclude. Not one marque could get to half the difference.
