The Jetta. Nothing fancy but that is what many buyers want

Car making has changed. Once a car maker made what was wanted in their home nation and if other nations also wanted them, then they were exported there. The Japanese car industry was perhaps the first to make vehicles that were not to local tastes but had potential overseas. Now many car makers have gone down that path. There are models here modified or especially designed for particular markets. To get around a long list of models, I have combined the modified ones under one main model that they are based on.

The Jetta is top but it also includes the Bora, Lavida and Sagitar. Passat encompasses the CC, Santana and Mangotan. The Fox model also has the Suran in it's total. Getting those into the right designation is a challenge and hopefully I did it correctly.

The increase in the VW brand was a modest 3%, not helped by VW's poor showing in the US. While specialist models are made for China, it seems that the US could do with some too.

In the light commercial area, things went back slightly. It is only a small part of VW business but still important. VW now lists the Saveiro as a car, but I'm unsure why. It looks like a pick up to me, but maybe it is now classified as a leisure vehicle. I left it where is has always been before.

Data source: VW group.

Summary: The growth isn't what I expected but the improved China result is offset by poor showings in other markets. That will happen and some of it is to do with issues a car maker has no control over. It will be interesting to see how 2015 goes for VW.
