The Renault Logan |
Renault in the Americas has two striking features. One is that it has no presence in the USA or Canada. Second, the profound effect of the Dacia range in Latin America. Thanks to Renault's openness, we can see how this is so.
Firstly, the USA. I have a record of Renault selling 2,425 cars in 1956. I believe 90,500 were sold in the peak of 1959. After that, sales ebbed and flowed until finally leaving the market around 1986. They have not returned and don't plan to at this stage.
With regard to Dacias in the Americas. They are sold as Renaults and the benefit has been impressive. Much of the rapid climb in sales for places such as Brazil and Argentina is due to these low cost models.
The chart shows sales for Renault, rebranded Dacias and in the case of Chile, Samsung cars from Korea. They also have light commercial sales included as well. To clarify the figures, 11.1 equals 11,100.
