Below is an article about Dutch car plant Nedcar in Born. To see the problem, production figures give it away. When the plant was shared, production volume made it viable. Now down to one brand and possibly one model, it would never pay. To show what I mean, production figures for the plant when Mitsubishi joined production:

Since it came down to one brand, things were not good. Expand or close? I don't see any future for the plant, not in car making anyway.

Nedcar Production History: 1995-2010

Just as Tata's purchase of JLR has been a success, Geely's ownership of Volvo is doing something similar for Volvo. So how did it go for the Swedish car maker in 2011?
Total sales: 449,255 (373525 2010, +20.3% increase).

Top 10 markets
(2010 in brackets):

USA 67,300 (54,000)

Italy 18,700 (17,500)
Netherl 16,000 (14,300)
France 15,700 (12,200)

Big improving model was the S60/V60 range (19,400 to 118,200).

Volvo say they were the fastest growing luxury car brand in 2011. China increased by 54.4%, North America 22.5%, Europe 13.1% and Overseas region 35.7%. 800,000 sales are targeted for 2020, with Chinese growth a major part of that goal. 200,000 sales in China is the goal by 2015.

Volvo has ambitious plans. Reaching them will depend on how the Chinese markets pans out over the next few years. They are playing catch up with the more established German marques in that country. In Sweden, VW is putting pressure on it for the top spot, the VW Group taking increasing share and sales form it.
A good performance for Volvo in 2011.

Thanks to Volvo owner Vadym who tipped me off about this data (source www.volvocars.com). I welcome any contact about suggested material I can include in the blog.

Volvo Sales: 2011

Volvo cars is a marque at the crossroads. Chinese owner Geely has just come out and said it is too Swedish.  Sales were down slightly in 2012 while other premium car makers were enjoying increased sales. I must say that when putting together the sales figures below, I wanted to rationalise the list as Volvo seems to make differentiate the same models by their variants. A car and a wagon version of it is surely one model, but not in Volvoland.

Volvo stands for safety, of which it is unrivalled. It also means design that is dull, which it needs to change. It also needs to clarify its model range. Below I put a sales list together, from a source recommended to me by a very helpful person named Vadym. Thank you for that, and the source is here if you want greater model detail. Thanks also to Volvo for an open policy.

S means sedan or saloon, C equaltes to coupe, V stands for variant or wagon and XC denotes SUV. I combined S and V when I thought it should be, but kept the SUVs separate. SUVs are colour coded pale green.

The new V40 hatchback (I'm surprised it isn't named H40) obviously caused the 40 range to grow, and the XC60 was up too, but the rest were all down. The marque needs it retain its legendary reputation but add more style and clearer model definitions (with less of them).

Anyone else wanting me to put an article together for then on anything like the above please say hello and a provide the information to rdc1234@gmail.com. Thanks again to Vadym.

Volvo Car Sales By Model: 2012

S60 Model

Owned by Chinese car maker Geely since 2010, big things are promised for the marque. Renown for safety and boxy designs, it is shaking off the latter reputation by rounding off corners. However, It's hard to see where Volvo will progress from here. They need to do more than get out the sandpaper.

Worldwide production dropped 7% in 2012 as I assume they place emphasis on being more profitable, a sensible strategy if I am right in that assumption. What I found surprising is that since a Chinese owner came along, production in China has dropped to a negligible amount.

Volvo is 23rd in the world for car/LCV production of brands that make cars in more than one country. Clearly there is work to do at Volvo to broaden its appeal and extend its sales dependency beyond mainly Europe and North America. It is a well known brand internationally but needs to attract customers beyond those already loyal.

In my opinion Volvo make the safest cars in real world conditions, not just in getting five stars in crash tests. (For more on that, please click here). However, they don't do much to stir my emotions.

Volvo Worldwide Production By Nation : 2012

V40 - 2nd most popular model

When you look at worldwide Volvo sales by nation, it quickly becomes apparent that China will play an important part of future growth. Other car makers have already done so, but Volvo was a bit slow getting going there. A Chinese owner obviously helps in that.

As seen below, the Chinese market was the difference between a slight increase and more sizable decrease in sales for 2013. The other nations dropped 23%, while Russia was off 26%.

Summary: Surely Volvo will benefit greatly in China in 2014, but it needs to be broadening its sales also. It risks relying too much on one market if trends continue, and the Chinese could impose restrictions on cars as they congest their cities. They know this, and will be doing what they can to widen out.

XC60 - The top selling model in the range

Volvo Car World Sales By Model : 2013

Volvo have put much into making their cars as safe as possible. They were also known as making boxy looking cars. They have kept with the safety and moved toward more rounded, stylish vehicles. Has it worked? Sales over this period have not moved much while the German competition has.
A major reason for this is Volvo didn't get much penetration in China. It is now fixing that quickly with new owner Geely. It is also going to export Chinese made Volvo cars too, something other premium car makers have shied away from.

As for safety, Volvo is ahead of anyone else. People think that any premium marque is going to be just as good in a crash. However, if safety is paramount for your premium vehicle purchase then look no further than Volvo.

As for sales per model, I can go back to 2000, then I hit a wall. I had to estimate a bit for that year too but not much. Still, it gives an idea of how things have gone of late. The chart below has sales in hundreds. As for each model...

S60/V60: The S60 is a compact car which was preceded by the S70 in the year 2000. The V60 is the estate car version.

The Volvo S60. The brick is clearly no longer the style inspiration

XC60: It is a compact SUV that is the best selling individual model for Volvo.

S40/V40/V50: The S40 is a compact car and the V models stand for versatile or wagon. They were the 40, then 50 and now going back to 40 again.

The V40 is quite a nice looking car

V70/XC70: These models are estate cars, the latter all wheel drive. Usually wagons are attached to a car variant but it seems it is somewhat of as a stand alone model.

XC90: A mid-sized SUV that was a strong seller but increased competition has reduced sales.

S80: This executive car has been around a while. It has the V70 as its estate version, but I put that with the XC70.

C70: It was a coupe and soft top, but the second generation from 2006 has a retractable hard top.

C30: A three door compact hatch model similar to the S/V40 in size was worth a try but didn't quite hit the spot and has now been deleted.
