This years sales in Austria may well be an all time record. It is a nation that prefers to buy European, especially German. The best Japanese make comes in a lowly 15th. VW achieved its best market share since 2001 and best sales since 2000. Renault got its best haul of units sold since 1999, assisted in part by Dacias being included under the Reggie logo. In case you were wondering, 5,256 Renault sales were actually Dacia models.

Car Sales Austria: 2011

Yes, they make cars in this alpine country, thanks to a Canadian owned company named Magna Steyr. All cars made here are from this company, made for other companies. In fact, it is the largest contract manufacturer for vehicles in the world. So how did things pan out on 2011:
MINI Countryman 89,000 +260%
BMW X3 17,900 -44%
Peugeot RCZ 13,700 _29%
M Benz SLS AMG/G-Class 7,200 +31%
Aston Martin Rapide 1,500 +0%

Total 129,300 +46%

Chrysler has just ceased making cars in Austria after many years. The X3 has finished I believe and the Rapide goes to the UK about now. Production was 209,000 in 2004, but by building for other car makers makes the whole operation subject to fluctuations. That accepted, it has done well to maintain as much consistency as it has.

Car Production Austria: 2011

Car sales in Austria were only down 6%. VW has been number one for so many years and Opel was always #2. VW remained on the top but Opel took a big hit in sales and slumped to 6th. Hyundai and Kia keep making inroads, while Fiat slips back. Nissan keeps chipping away at the leader board and is amazingly the highest placed Japanese brand at 15th.

The first three columns show 2010 to 2012 ranking, the second column in from the right is increase or decrease, and the extreme right shows market share for the major brands.

Car Sales Austria: 2012

This central Euro nation loves anything from the VW stable. To highlight this the list below shows all VW owned brands in yellow. You would have to go to Germany to see more yellow! The Qashqai yet again is strong coming in 14th and with a 19% gain, despite Japanese marques not being popular. I guess that it was designed in Europe means it appeals to local taste.

Car Sales Austria By Model: 2012

Things were different in Austria in 1989. Japanese brands were stronger then than they are now. They were cheap, value for money, interesting and of course reliable. How things have changed for them. The Yen is more realistically valued, making them more expensive. They are for the most part conservative and dull. They are still reliable but the competition has made up ground in that area.

Other changes are premium brands are doing better now and the Koreans have arrived. Both Land Rover and MINI are no longer part of Rover, which has gone. However, the biggest change is how the Japanese brands have slipped back.

The first two columns are ranking for 1988 and 1999. The extreme right column is market share for '89 and the second from last column is percentage change from '88 to '89.
