Another bouncy year for car sales here, with VW finishing up this winner of Denmark's version of musical chairs. With an amazing 60% increase in one year emphasises how things change. Then Ford managed a decrease when the overall market went up so strongly, surrendering a sizable lead in the process.

Denmark has very expensive cars, due to high registration fees and taxes. However, sales are brisk in this affluent nation.

Car/LCV Sales Denmark: 2011

New cars in Denmark are expensive. This is to reduce buying which it does, but there are plenty of Danes that a) need a car and b) can afford a new one. Therefore sales are strong anyway. In fact 2012 was a good year for car sales, not a record but strong nevertheless. I have included light commercials as well which assists French brands on the list below for example. Makes such as Iveco turn up too.

VW has cemented itself at # 1 spot, as Ford slips a bit. Suzuki was 3rd in 2005, but continues to lose ground. Toyota is moving up nicely and Kia had a real jump in 2012. Premium marques are not big sellers here.

The first three columns show 2010 to 2012 ranking, the second column in from the right is increase or decrease, and the extreme right shows market share for the major brands.

Car/LCV Sales Denmark: 2012

Denmark's highly taxed cars has meant that many popular models are small cars, as you see below. The new UP! model has taken the nation by storm, but I wonder if VW can keep that up! If you add the similar Citigo model, then it really is a much liked car. Kia showed some good gains too.

Car Sales Denmark By Model: 2012

The Ford Sierra was 5th in 1987...

In October 2013, all of the top ten car models sold in Denmark are very small, or tiny. I wondered if it is the very high cost of ownership that causes this. Is it because of  environmental concerns? Northern Europeans do seem to like bigger cars than other parts of Europe, so why are such small vehicles so popular in Denmark? I found car sales for 1987 and thought that may provide an answer.

I noticed there is only one small car listed back then, the Fiat Uno. Some are quite large such as the 626, Sierra and 405. So Danes did used to buy larger cars than they do now. Certainly the environment is more important now than '87, but I think that the cost is perhaps the main factor in the move to small.

As for differences in brand sales, VW is now up to 1st from 5th back then. Ford and Toyota have swapped places, while Peugeot is up from 9th to 4th. Skoda have entered the top ten (now 5th), Citroen are placed the same (6th), and Kia are new in (7th). Renault are now 8th, Hyundai 9th, and Opel have fallen from 1st to 10th. Mazda (now 19th), Fiat (12th), Nissan (11th) and Volvo (21st) are currently off the top ten list.

Summary: Nothing stays the same and just as the size of cars sold in Denmark has reduced greatly, so too the ranking of models is quite different.

...while the Peugeot 405 was 10th.

Wonderful Copenhagen - a popular picture on jigsaws

A 6.7% increase was a strong result for this small nation that would prefer if its citizens rode bikes. Peugeot was mainly the biggest brand here for many years, but VW suddenly took that three years ago. It has been increasing the gap between it and second ever since.

There are some big movements here, as is often the case with small sales totals. Skoda is flying up the charts, as has Nissan but to a lesser degree.
