011/12

Pakistan car and LCV sales are for July to June 2011/12. The figures below are only vehicles locally assembled, imported models are not reported. Mind you, there wouldn't be many of the latter. The LR figure is only the Defender model. Suzuki manages to take over 60% of the sales, with Toyota just under 30%.

Car LCV Sales Pakistan: 2011/12

A popular car in Pakistan - the Suzuki Cultus
Sales figures are affected by who compiles them, especially in Asia. In Pakistan it is PAMA, the association that represents manufacturers. Therefore the sales here listed are only for cars and LCVs assembled there. This is a very common practice in Asia. The thought of releasing data for public information is not a concept that is understood in many countries in the region.

Suzuki Mehran - another big seller
Suzuki is the dominant player in the Indian subcontinent. However it lost sales and market share in Pakistan for 2013. Honda did very well and Land Rover improved it's Defender sales on a low 2012 result. Hyundai came back after a brief absence. It was a successful brand here a decade ago. Master assemble commercial vehicles for other brands such as Fuso and some Chinese ones, but only a few light commercial vehicles, which show up on the chart below.

The Defender assembled in Pakistan

Pakistan Sales By Brand : 2013

29,500 sold in the year just ended

In Pakistan, the sales year goes from July to June, so the figures below are from July 2013 to June 2014. It is also only for cars assembled in the country as well. So Land Rover sales are only for the Defender model, not the others that are imported. However, not many cars are imported due to high tariffs so the data is indicative of what really happens there.

Passenger car sales of locally assembled vehicles were 118,100, 1,150 SUVs and 17,650 Pick ups.

Suzuki has over half the car sales as you can see.  Some sales by model: Cultus 14,650, Mehran 29,500, Bolan 14,100 and Ravi pick up 12,400. Toyota Corolla 29,100 and Hilux 4,500. Honda Civic 9,950 and City 13,750.

Hyundai had been in the market for many years but without too much penetration and pulled out for three year. Now it is back briefly assembling the Santro car and the Shehzore pick up. I'm not sure they are staying. Master make commercial vehicles and one pick up model which shows up here.

As you can see, the models are mainly older ones. To make any money out of relatively small assembly runs makes that necessary. Protected markets are not efficient but they do limit imports and provide some local employment. I guess it's worth the trouble.

Pakistan Local Sales : 2013/14

A Suzuki Advertisement in Pakistan

In countries like Pakistan, car assembly is possible through stiff tariffs that restrict fully built up imports. Total production was close to 150,000, most of them being passenger cars. The market isn't big enough to support more assembly and it isn't used as an export hub. It would be uneconomic to do so when they are basically assembled from kits. It's not a politically stable area of the world either.

Cars: Suzuki has been the main manufacturer for years and holds its share consistently. For that matter, Toyota and Honda have also been much the same too. Honda jumped in 2012, but fell back a little in 2014.

Utility: A few more brands but less volume. Toyota owns Hino so they could be combined but the vehicles they make differ so I kept them separate.

Summary: The vehicle assembly industry doesn't change much from year to year and that will continue. Many feel the price of cars is too high, the assembly quality substandard and selection limited. Some used imports also come from Japan to make cars slightly more accessible. However, most Pakistanis cannot afford a car and car ownership remains low.

Pakistan Vehicle Assembly By Brand : 2014

In Pakistan sales are counted from July 2014 to June 2015. The sales below are for that period, hence why they are late arriving. The figures only account for locally made sales but not imports, a typical peculiarity of Asian nations. As most sales will be covered anyway, I thought it worth the trouble of doing.

Suzuki have just over half the market, with six models listed. Toyota come in with 32% with three and Honda 13% and two. That really does cover the market except for some LR Defenders.

Hyundai has been a bigger player in the past but not now as can be said for Daihatsu also. Master make trucks for Fuso under license and a few qualify to be counted as LCVs.
