I believe only 2008 had more cars sold than this year in Russia. With a 39% increase, it was a buoyant year. This was the lowest market share for home brand car Lada apart from 2008. Among the ten best selling models, nine were locally produced so there is a strong car manufacturing industry here. Imported cars are quite highly taxed.

Did you know? Over 80% of Renault cars sold in Russia are actually Dacia models sold with a Renault logo.
I wonder: Can the car sales boom last in Russia?

Car Sales Russia: 2011

Lada is still king of the castle, but by a reduced margin. In 2001, Lada had over 75% of the market so that was never going to be sustainable as new brands came along. I think it has done remarkably well to be selling what it is now. VW has been a big mover here over recent times, while Fiat is moving quickly in the opposite direction. The market grew 11% but toward the end of the year, things were slowing up. It's a big market with some hefty numbers.

The first three columns show 2010 to 2012 ranking, the second column in from the right is increase or decrease, and the extreme right shows market share for the major brands.

Car Sales Russia: 2012

Lada grabs the top three spots for 2012, with the Priora (pictured top) leading the way. Renault does well selling Dacias under its own brand. Seeing as Renault has a share of Lada and Nissan, combined they have a sizable share of the market. There are still Daewoos selling here but it must be on price mainly. Hyundai do well with the Solaris (pictured bottom).

Car Sales Russia By Model: 2012

Renault Duster - 4th best seller and cleaning up

There are brands in Russia that are not commonly known in the world. Some are Russian, Ukrainian or Chinese. Some Russian firms make Chinese cars under licence. This list also includes light commercial vehicles.

6th best seller in Russia
The total market was down after three years of good increase. Lada continues to concede ground, as it has for years, going back to a time when import cars were rare. It had just over 75% share back in 2001, to give an idea of the slide down. It is now run by Renault-Nissan which should see an effect on the cars Lada makes when new models come along. The competition is hot in Russia.
