The Nissan Tsuru was a no frills budget model. Over 68,000 were sold in 2004 |
Sales were building and new brands were arriving in numbers. It was assisted by trade liberalisation as best I can tell. GM was now under pressure from an improving Nissan, while VW and Honda were holding sales but losing their share of the market.
The way new brands quickly established themselves with healthy sales I find surprising. Perhaps having so much more variety was new and exciting to buyers. However, getting the dealer network established takes time so that must have been organised with gusto.
