Do they look similar to you?

The Sirion has been around several years, the Škoda is just being released. To my eye, when I saw it, I thought Sirion. The pics I chose are not ideal matches, such as two door / four door and colours. Despite that, the basic shape is very similar to me. Which means that the Daihatsu was an advanced design when released. I think Škoda could have done something more daring.

Škoda Citygo vs Daihatsu Siron

When I was growing up, Škoda was a brand to joke about. But now VW is slowly but surely turning the brand around. VW bought into Škoda in 1991 and took control in the year 2000. Since then, VW has slowly moved it forward. It certainly not the butt of any jokes now. Two new models are here for 2012, their first full year production helping to keep Škoda numbers heading upwards. The Octavia model represents almost half of all cars made.

It is getting a balanced look about the range now, but I wonder if going forward from here may be a challenge. It needs to get into more markets, and that is what is happening. How well that goes will decide how successful Škoda is.

Škoda Production By Model: 2012

Octavia Model

Škoda became part of the VW Group in the year 1991 and a full subsidiary in 2000. This helped the image and quality of the cars greatly. Today, they are popular in Europe and China, but not well established elsewhere.

Production grew a modest 2% in 2012, with home manufacturing in the Czech Rep the only area it was lower. Still well over half of all manufacturing is in the home nation, but signs of branching out are there.

With Škoda cars today built on VW sourced platforms, they offer value superior to that of the donor brand. The range of vehicles will grow as will its global reach. With 1.2% of worldwide car/LCV production, it comes in at number 21.

Rapid Model(s)

Škoda Worldwide Production By Nation : 2012

The Rapid is actually a hatch. Very roomy, value priced but lacks refinement.

Škoda has been slowly improving its image and sales over the years. That said, I have to say that it isn't as successful as I thought it may be by now. There are many areas of the world that the brand is not sold in. It relies mainly on Europe and China. For some reason Škoda didn't grow in China despite sales going up overall. It shows the challenge car makers have in a congested market.

The new Rapid hit the road and the new Citigo also did well. As for the rest, it wasn't a great year. With worldwide car sales on the up, reduced production surprised. Will 2014 be better? VW has a goal for Škoda of 1.5 million cars by 2018.

An interesting design but it hasn't sold that well.

Škoda Production By Model : 2013

When VW took on Škoda in 1991, it was a small brand with a poor reputation. Things have changed. It's taken twenty years to see a very different car brand. Once people trust the brand, and the price is right, things start to happen. They seemed to have more freedom that SEAT, and they have a niche that everyone understands. I cannot say the range of cars they have is completely balanced yet, but is on the way there.
The chart below is in two parts. On the left 1991-99 and the right side 2000-09. Numbers are in hundreds.

1) Octavia. It's considered a compact car, but it seems at the larger end of that segment. It has been a very successful model, reviving the model of the same name that ceased back in 1971.
2) Fabia/Felica/Favorit. It's taken a while to get the name right for this car. This supermini model was the Favorit as a 5 door Hatch and the Forman when a wagon. It became the Felicia over a few years in the 1990's before the Fabia label arrived around the year 2000. Along with the Ocatvia, a volume seller for the marque.

A Favorit from way back

3) Superb. The last Škoda Superb ended in 1949. The large saloon car returned in 2001 as a 4 door car. The generation 2 gained a wagon model, while the car can also double as a hatchback, depending how you open the rear lid. Clever.

The Superb, looking well... just that

4) Roomster. This model you either get or you don't. Perhaps not enough people 'got it'. MPV may be the best way to describe it and it is different. Clever, but perhaps too much so. It also comes as a light commercial vehicle (the Praktik), which I assume is included in the figures below for I cannot find them elsewhere.

5) Yeti. This SUV just made it in time for the 2009 deadline for this analysis. I think it should have come sooner but VW hasn't been the quickest company to embrace that booming sector.

Summary: In this time, Škoda has gone from a one model, small selling brand to a popular make in Europe and China. It still has many countries to enter. They sell here in New Zealand and are slowly gaining acceptance. It was a make that was joked about when it sold here in the communist era. Things have changed.

The range is broader and sales are steadily on the rise, 2014 being a record year. It is still mainly a European brand but is doing well in China, which is a big help. The Octavia has become the mainstay of the range and the newer Rapid is earning its keep. The small Citigo doesn't seemed to have succeeded and the quirky Roomster has proved to be a marginal seller.

Škoda Global Production By Model : 2014

Škoda is a brand that is going well. At 21st for worldwide production, there is plenty of scope. Volumes are not helped by the fact that it is only strong in Europe and China. I think parent VW has missed an opportunity by not using it more. Renault has benefited immensely with Dacia and while Škoda isn't the same sort of budget brand, it still is more low cost than VW.

With over 60% of production in its home nation and much of the rest in China, Škoda is limited in its spread. It seems VW is the brand that the parent company wants to push more. Yet Škoda is more profitable and I believe that some within VW are not happy about. I read somewhere it was to do with the belief that Škoda was getting VW technology too cheaply.

It will be interesting to see how the emissions scandal will affect the Czech make as its diesels are affected too.
